Summary

In this terrifying thriller, a supernatural force—set in motion a century ago—threatens to devastate New York City。

Far upstate, in New York’s ancient forests, a drowned village lays beneath the dark, still waters of the Chilewaukee reservoir。 Early in the 20th century, the town was destroyed for the greater good: bringing water to the millions living downstate。 Or at least that’s what the politicians from Manhattan insisted at the time。 The local families, settled there since America’s founding, were forced from their land, but they didn’t move far, and some didn’t move at all…

Now, a century later, the repercussions of human arrogance are finally making themselves known。 An inspector assigned to oversee the dam, dangerously neglected for decades, witnesses something inexplicable。 It turns out that more than the village was left behind in the waters of the Chill when it was abandoned。 The townspeople didn’t evacuate without a fight。 A dark prophecy remained, too, and the time has come for it to be fulfilled。 Those who remember must ask themselves: who will be next? For sacrifices must be made。 And as the dark waters begin to inexorably rise, the demand for a fresh sacrifice emerges from the deep。。。

A little slow to begin but it does pick up to become a good ghost story。

Consider organizing your spices instead of reading this book。

More like 3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed the book & thought it was well written。 However, it was a slog until about halfway through and then things started picking up。 I also didn’t enjoy the paranormal aspect of it much and thought the big explanation behind everything didn’t do much and was more confusing than anything (but maybe I misread or it didn’t process much) but it was such a small section。 The ending was pretty much as you would have expected, but the thriller aspects were very well done More like 3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed the book & thought it was well written。 However, it was a slog until about halfway through and then things started picking up。 I also didn’t enjoy the paranormal aspect of it much and thought the big explanation behind everything didn’t do much and was more confusing than anything (but maybe I misread or it didn’t process much) but it was such a small section。 The ending was pretty much as you would have expected, but the thriller aspects were very well done。 。。。more

Loved it!! It has ghosts, hydrology, engineering, and my all time favorite science…。geology。 ♥️♥️♥️Ghosts aside, I found this book interesting and dark。 As a geologist working in groundwater, I found a lot of the facts accurate and thought it brought attention to how devastating dams can be to the cities left behind to create them。 Kudos to Scott Carson! Cannot wait for the new book。

this book was so interesting! i love the idea of centering the plot around a submerged town, it felt like an urban legend kind of vibe and i thought it was super cool。 i also loved the characters。 for having the story switch between 5 different perspectives, i felt like each character was so developed and their voices all were so fitting for them。 aaron was my favorite character for sure, his arc was great。 i thought the mystery was cool overall, the paranormal aspect was fun, but it did feel li this book was so interesting! i love the idea of centering the plot around a submerged town, it felt like an urban legend kind of vibe and i thought it was super cool。 i also loved the characters。 for having the story switch between 5 different perspectives, i felt like each character was so developed and their voices all were so fitting for them。 aaron was my favorite character for sure, his arc was great。 i thought the mystery was cool overall, the paranormal aspect was fun, but it did feel like it dragged at a few moments。 overall i really enjoyed it!! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Started off good and it was right up until Steve Ellsworth was murdered that the plot started to bore me。 It wasn’t a bad book it was just okay。 The plot was hard to follow。 I don’t understand how the ghosts worked。 I don’t understand how Mick Fleming came back from the dead。 I know it was briefly mentioned that the water had something to do with it but aside from this it wasn’t explained。

This was not a bad book, I actually enjoyed the story a lot。 It did feel a bit long-winded to me, and there was absolutely nothing about the pacing that said it was a thriller。 Poorly labeled but still worth the read。

This one was fun。 Great story。 I’ve always loved a good ghost story。 This one delivers。 You can tell that Koryta…erm, I mean Carson writes thrillers when it comes to the pacing with this one。 Several places had me on the edge of my seat。 Well-written and thoughtful way of dealing with addiction also。 Overall, this is one that makes me wish GoodReads would allow us to rate with half-stars because I’d give this one a 4。5/5。 Carson also has another novel set to release later this year and I’ll defi This one was fun。 Great story。 I’ve always loved a good ghost story。 This one delivers。 You can tell that Koryta…erm, I mean Carson writes thrillers when it comes to the pacing with this one。 Several places had me on the edge of my seat。 Well-written and thoughtful way of dealing with addiction also。 Overall, this is one that makes me wish GoodReads would allow us to rate with half-stars because I’d give this one a 4。5/5。 Carson also has another novel set to release later this year and I’ll definitely be reading that one as well。 。。。more

I loved the premise and the framing of this novel but not the execution。 Carson tells the story of a town that fought vehemently against eminent domain issues, Galesburg, before ending up underwater for the construction of a reservoir in the Catskills。 I thought that this was a really fitting thriller given everything going on at Lake Lanier in Georgia。The creepy, paranormal element could've been executed in a better manner-- I was more confused than creeped out, because some of the scenes just I loved the premise and the framing of this novel but not the execution。 Carson tells the story of a town that fought vehemently against eminent domain issues, Galesburg, before ending up underwater for the construction of a reservoir in the Catskills。 I thought that this was a really fitting thriller given everything going on at Lake Lanier in Georgia。The creepy, paranormal element could've been executed in a better manner-- I was more confused than creeped out, because some of the scenes just seemed so implausible。 (view spoiler)[ I'm so down for the idea of vengeful ghosts trying to get revenge for their town, but it seemed really odd to me that the ghosts were trying to punish innocent New Yorkers who had no say in what happened to them。 And, as ghosts, their characters were super flat so as a reader, you had no idea what or if they were thinking at all。 (hide spoiler)] If anything, I felt the sections of the book explaining the workings of the dam had the most clarity, while page-turner action scenes in the climax were almost impossible to follow。 。。。more

The only reason I didn't dnf this book is that finishing it counted towards my reading challenge 🙄It is marketed as a 'thriller' yet it fails to fulfill any of the requirements of the genre。 A long-winded, choppy-paced read with characters that have the depth of a puddle, and a promise of a paranormal element that was barely there。 The only reason I didn't dnf this book is that finishing it counted towards my reading challenge 🙄It is marketed as a 'thriller' yet it fails to fulfill any of the requirements of the genre。 A long-winded, choppy-paced read with characters that have the depth of a puddle, and a promise of a paranormal element that was barely there。 。。。more

[3/5] So much potential! I enjoyed the beginning and even told my husband I thought he'd like the premise, the history, the paranormal, etc。 and where it all seemed to be headed。 But somewhere around 60% (audio book), I started thinking, wait, I'm only halfway? It seemed like it was dragging on。 Then it seemed like something climactic happened too soon, so I was thrown way off。 Finally, the ending seemed rather dull as well。 There was a moment when I assumed, okay, there's more to this, but then [3/5] So much potential! Started off really strong and had a great creep factor。 Then it started getting too explanation heavy with the construction of dams and it lost some speed。 Could have been about 100 pages shorter and would have packed more of a punch。

I’m flooded with confusion in writing this review (pardon the pun)。 I liked this book and I didn’t。 For one, It’s a personal pet peeve when an author writes under a pen name。 Readers eventually find out and then it becomes common knowledge。 So why do it? I know way too damn much about dams at this point。 While there were many, may things to love about this book: Aaron for one and the rich, looming setting that seeped into your blood for another, ultimately I think the technical aspect of having to understand damn dams was just too much。 It waterlogged the book and made it hard to get through, with characters taking a backseat to long chapters made up of architectural damn details。 And while there were genuinely haunting images that will stay wit I know way too damn much about dams at this point。 While there were many, may things to love about this book: Aaron for one and the rich, looming setting that seeped into your blood for another, ultimately I think the technical aspect of having to understand damn dams was just too much。 It waterlogged the book and made it hard to get through, with characters taking a backseat to long chapters made up of architectural damn details。 And while there were genuinely haunting images that will stay with me for awhile, and a killer idea of dark water, drowned towns and terrible legacies, ultimately for me it got lost in the shuffle。 The climax was great, but I could have used more of the disaster rather than the build up。 I would however love to see this in film form, where the damn can just be seen and understood rather than explained to death。 。。。more

This book was weird。And not, like, intriguing weird。 Just, like, weird-WEIRD。 Definitely not scary, either, despite the cast of characters being largely populated by ghosts。 But the non-ghost characters were relatable and interesting, definitely carrying the story, and when the action finally picked up—wow, did it pick up。 Also, I incidentally learned a shit-ton about dams and reservoirs, so that bumped this 3。5-star book into the 4-star rating。I’m glad I read it, but I probably won’t be recomme This book was weird。And not, like, intriguing weird。 Just, like, weird-WEIRD。 Definitely not scary, either, despite the cast of characters being largely populated by ghosts。 But the non-ghost characters were relatable and interesting, definitely carrying the story, and when the action finally picked up—wow, did it pick up。 Also, I incidentally learned a shit-ton about dams and reservoirs, so that bumped this 3。5-star book into the 4-star rating。I’m glad I read it, but I probably won’t be recommending it。 。。。more

I wish I could give 3。5 stars because it was a book I was able to put down and not super eager to get back to。 However, the plot was intriguing and at the halfway point I was hooked。 I felt the ending could have been better but overall a good read that lends itself to the possibility of a sequel。

“Sacrifice is about salvation, not vengeance。” A quote from a neighbor in the book。 But this story is all about sacrifice for revenge。A supernatural horror story, thriller, fantasy, ghost story, mixed with information (sometimes too much) about dams, reservoirs, the NYC water supply system, and the practice of drowning towns for the purpose of storing water for cities。 I’m not a particular fan of fantasy and horror, but the story was well-written and kept my attention to the end。
